Zero and DDOJ
Chapter Ten Lucy sits down on her bed and leans back on the pillow. Zero walks over and sits in a chair at the table. She motions for him to come over and says "You can sit on the bed. For some reason, I trust you." He rises from the chair and puts it back against the small table. As he walks over to the bed, he looks at her shirt. "What's a Duran?" She gives him an odd look and says "What?" He points at her shirt and says "What's a Duran?" She breaks out laughing and says "What have you been locked away for the past decade?" He doesn't respond, just looks at her. "Oh. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring up any bad memories." Zero sits down next to her and says "No problem. It would have come up sooner or later." She moves over a bit, now feeling a little uneasy. "What were you in for?" Zero looks down at the ground and thinks. He is not sure if he wants to open up to her. People always think differently when they found out his past. "I am not comfortable talking about it." She moves over a little more. "Can you tell me, was it something serious like murder or rape?" Zero looks up at her with a strange look on his face. "What? Did you think I was in prison?" A puzzled look comes over her face. "You weren't in prison?" Zero gives her an odd look. "No, I spent time in a mental institution." Lucy is unsure if she should be relieved or more worried. She is not sure what is worse, a criminal or a mental patient. Zero then looks at her and says "If you must know, I had a rough time adjusting to life after Nam. At one time I tried to kill myself and ended up in an institution." The look on her face changes from being scared to feeling pity. "I'm sorry." is all she says. She is unsure what to say next. Part of her feels bad because she thought the worst of him and another part of her is curious to find out more. Sensing this, Zero decides to open up a bit more. "While I saw alot of horrible stuff in Nam, the one thing that still haunts me is the faces of some kids I killed." He puts his head down and stares at his feet. Lucy comes over and puts her arm around him. She starts rubbing his back and says "Alot of bad things went down." He looks up at her with a tear rolling down his face. "We were on patrol, when my squadron came under fire. We took cover as the shots were fired over our heads. One of my buddies was shot and was bleeding to death. I knew we had to get him out of there if he was to have a chance. But we needed to stop the shooting. So I snuck around behind the snipers and opened fire on them. When I went in to see if they were all dead, I saw they were a bunch of kids. They were just little kids and I killed them." He breaks down crying as she starts hugging him. She rubs his head and says "It's all right, you didn't know. How could you?" While they are having their tender moment, the eyes in the picture come out again and are replaced by human eyes. While Lucy is hugging Zero, she looks over and notices the eyes. Something looks odd about them but she is not sure what it is. Then they blink and she realizes that someone is peeping on them. She then whispers into Zero's ear "Don't look, but someone is watching us from the painting. I am going to distract him on the bed while you go over to my backpack and get out my hairspray. Once you get it, sneak over to the painting and spray it into the eyes of the painting. Understand?" Zero whispers back "How are you going to distract him?" She whispers in his ear "I have my ways." They then quit hugging and he heads over. While he does that, she lays on the bed and starts pulling up her shirt. "Please hurry back, I ache for you honey." Zero turns around and see her laying on the bed. She has the shirt pulled up and showing her lacy underwear. She is rubbing a finger slowly over her panties, in a very seductive manner. Her other hand is rubbing her breast through her shirt. She is writhing back and forth and moaning as she simulates self pleasuring herself. Zero stops and watches her for a second. This girl is really hot. He is not used to seeing a woman do this that isn't asking for money in a cheap peep show. She opens her eyes and sees him watching and gives him a dirty look. This gets him moving again. She then return to her mock stimulation. Zero grabs the bag and starts digging through it. He is amazed at how much stuff she has crammed in there. He is pulling out clothes when he comes across a bra. He looks at the size. 34C. He smiles as he puts it aside. He then digs in and finds a brush and next to it is a can of hairspray. He pulls it out and puts it next to his leg to hide it from the peeping Tom. He then slowly makes his way over to the wall and starts moving towards the painting, while hugging the wall to stay out of view. As he looks at her, she has her hand inside her panties and is moving it up and down. She is moving all over and moaning as her hand moves around. Zero slowly moves over to the painting and as he is near it, he hears a faint sound of a man breathing heavy. He slowly lifts the hairspray and when it is in front of the painting, he sprays it. He keeps spraying it into both holes as he hears someone scream out "Son of a bitch." He then hears the person fall backwards and fumble around as they are blinded. Lucy pulls her hand out of her panties and jumps up. She runs over to the picture and screams into the holes "That will teach you, pervert." Zero looks at her as she is smiling. "Aren't you worried that you permantly blinded him." She laughs and says "It would teach him a lesson." Zero then looks at her and says "You really were going there on the bed." Suddenly her face turns red. She smiles at him and says "I was faking it." Zero gives her an odd look. "You mean all that moaning and groaning was fake?" She smiles and says "Pretty good, eh?" He is amazed. "So how about if we both go back to the bed and fake it?" She breaks out laughing. "What if we call it a night before we both do something we will regret." Zero gives her a sad look and says "Trust me, I won't regret it. Even if you are faking it." She laughs as she shows him to the door. Before she can close the door, he stops it and says "You still haven't answered my question." A puzzled look comes over her face. "What question?" He then points at her shirt and says "What's a Duran?" The two agents are finding a lack of cooperation at the concert. With their suits on, they are a dead giveaway and every person they ask has nothing to say. They show the sketches they have of Zero and DDOJ, but no one is willing to tell them anything. They are beginning to realize that this is a waste of time. These people do not like authority figures. They look at each other and decide it is time to go in a different direction. As they head out of the concert, they are stopped by a small man with a thin build and long hair. He is wearing a tie die shirt and granny glasses. "I heard you are looking for someone." The agents turn around in surprise. "Are you talking to me?" the first agent says as he looks at the man. "I heard you are looking for someone, I can possibly help you." The agents look at each other with surprised looks on their faces. The second agent then speaks up "We are looking for two men, did you see either one?" He hands the sketches to the man and he looks at them. "You never forget a head like that." He then hands the pictures back to the agents. The first agent then asks "So did you see them?" The man smiles and says "Yes, I did." The second agent then asks "Do you know where they are now? Are they still here?" The man thinks for a moment. "The one with the funny head was having a bad acid trip, so I don't think they are here anymore." The first agent then asks "Do you have any idea where they are headed?" Once again, he thinks about it. "I saw them hanging with Lucy. So they may be headed to Sturgis." The two agents look at each other. This is the first big lead they have received. "What makes you think they are headed to Sturgis?" The man smiles and says "Lucy is a biker chick. And they have a huge party for bikers. She goes there every year." The second agent then asks "How do you know Lucy? Is she a friend of yours?" He smiles as he thinks about her. "She is a regular at the dead concerts. No one knows her real name, they just call her Lucy. She is big in helping people who are having a bad trip." The two agents look at each other. They are confused about this. The first one then asks "Why do they call her Lucy?" The man laughs and says "She is named after the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. The song is about taking acid and so she became Lucy." Neither agent is familiar with the song or its meaning, so they take his word for it. He then adds "I have tried for years to get Lucy to join my church, but she is too much of a free spirit to be tied down." The second agent then asks "You have your own church?" The guy reaches in his pocket and pulls out a business card and hands it to them "I am Reverend Earth of the Church of the Good Earth. I come to places like this to preach about taking care of the planet and trying to stop Mother Earth from suffering." The men look at each other. They are not sure if they should continue to listen or to get out of there. Reverend Earth continues "We take too much from Mother Earth and give back only trash and pollution. We need to learn to live in harmony with nature, not rape it, before it is too late." The second agent knows that he will regret asking but he does anyway "What happens when it is too late?" The Reverend's eyes open wide and he says "Before the animals come together and reclaim the planet." They decide it is time to get away from him. "Thanks for your help, but we have to go." As they are leaving, Reverend Earth screams out "Bugs alone outnumber us 1000,000 to 1. When they decide to attack, we are doomed. You hear me, doomed." The next morning, Zero is jarred away by a banging on the door. "Time to get up." Lucy yells as she knocks on the connecting door. He struggles to lift his head. He stares at the clock to see it is 8:00 AM. He looks over at the other bed to see DDOJ is passed out. He wonders what time he finally fell asleep. At least he turned off the television. Before he can guess what time DDOJ went to bed, he is interrupted by another round of loud knocks. "Wake up sleepy heads." she screams out as she keeps banging on the door. "I'm up." he screams as he pulls himself out of bed. He looks over and is amazed that DDOJ is sleeping through all this noise. He slowly moves over to the connecting door and opens it. On the other side, he sees that Lucy is fully dressed and took a shower. She has on a pair of tight fitting Jordache jeans and a white blouse. "About time you got up." she says as she enters his room. As she sees DDOJ laying on the bed, she asks "What time did he finally fall asleep?" Zero looks over at DDOJ, who is sleeping so soundly and says "I have no idea. I fell asleep an hour after I left your room." She walks over and picks up his hand. She lifts it up and drops it. His hand falls to the bed. She then pulls back one of his eyelids and looks. Nothing. "He is out like a light. We better let him get some sleep." Zero looks at her and says "What do you plan to do while he is sleeping?" a dirty smile comes over his face. Realizing what he is thinking, she decides to teach him a lesson. She comes over and puts her arms around him and smiles as she licks her lips. "What I want is something big and hard to put in my mouth." Zero puts his arms around her waist and says "What did you have in mind?" She licks her lips again and then looks down at his crotch. "Something that will really satisfy me." He pulls her closer as he says "I have something that will satisfy you." She looks deep in his eyes and says "Good, cause I have a real hunger." She then pulls away and seductively rubs her finger around her lips. "Know what would really satisfy me?" Zero moves back over to her and says "What?" She then pushes him away and says "Breakfast. I really want some bacon and eggs." This brings him back to earth as disappointment comes over his face. "You really know how to ruin a moment." She laughs as she says "The only moment was in your mind. Now get dressed and we can get some grub, while your buddy sleeps." At the front desk, Lucy and Zero wait for some service. They hear something going on in the back and she yells out "Hello!" After a few minutes, the door opens and the old lady from the day before comes out. They see a man laying on a bed in the room, with a wet towel over his eyes. "Are you checking out?" she asks. Lucy smiles and says "No, we are going to stay another night. But can you tell me about any good restaurants around here?" The lady thinks "We usually serve food here, but my husband is not feeling well. If you go up the road to the next exit, there is a Dennys." Lucy smiles and says "Thanks. I hope your husband feels better." They try to keep from laughing at least until they get out the door. Then they break out laughing as they head to their bikes. Sitting at a table in Denny's, Zero and Lucy are talking. "What is the appeal of the Grateful Dead shows?" Zero asks as he has a bite of his pancake. Lucy looks up from her bacon and eggs and says "You were at the concert, didn't you feel it?" Zero takes another bite as he looks at her. "Feel what?" Lucy takes a drink of her orange juice as she rolls her eyes. "Why is it so hard to see? Why is the whole world so blind?" Zero laughs as he says "Hit a nerve, did I?" She folds her arms and says "It isn't you. It's just that I get tired of having to justify my actions. But since you asked, the appeal of the Grateful Dead, at least for me is the sense of community. I like how the people are friendly and non violent. I like the music, the clothes, the whole atmosphere. I like how people just dance to the music and enjoy themselves. There are no macho jerks that you get at metal concerts. I can go to a dead concert and see people I know. I see people sharing and caring. And there isn't enough of that in this materialistic, me first world." Zero just stares at her, unsure if he should say anything or not. She is obviously fired up about this and it may be best to just be quiet. Sensing that he is hesitant to talk, she takes the initiative. "So tell me, why did you go to the dead concert?" She caught him on the spot. Does he tell her the truth about how he wanted to hide in a crowd, in case the police were looking for him. Or does he make up some elaborate lie to impress her? He decides on the latter. "I saw them in the sixties and wanted to see how much they changed." Her eyes get real big. "Really! You saw them in the sixties." He thinks in his head about what to say next. He knows that whatever he tells her, he will have to remember. "Yeah, after I got out of Nam, I did the California thing. Bummed at the beach, hung out in Frisco, the whole thing. I was a hippie with the long hair and the bandana." He gives her a peace sign to try and legitimize it. She is hanging on his every word. "Yeah, I went to a concert that had a bunch of bands. It was called Monterey Pop or something like that. Don't know if you ever heard of it." She squeals in excitement. "You were at Monterey Pop! That is like my all-time biggest dream." He can feel her excitement as her face lights up. "Yeah, but I was pretty far away from the stage. When Hendrix came out, I could tell he was doing something on stage, but it wasn't until later that I found out he set his guitar on fire and played it." Zero knows that this will save his lying hide. He is glad he saw the movie and remembered some of it. "How about the Dead, tell me about the Dead." Zero thinks back to the movie. As he thinks about it, he remembers a quote from he thinks Jerry Garcia about how the Dead was overlooked because they played between Hendrix and his burning guitar and the Who and their smashing instruments. "I remember them having a good set. The people were really grooving to them. But The Who stole the show and unfortunately most people didn't really remember the Dead. I mostly remember how the hippie chicks were really dancing to the Grateful Dead." He then smiles as he pretends to get nostalgic. Some of what Zero has told her is true. He did bum around California in the sixties. When he finished his tour in Nam in 1967, he came back to the states and decided to drop out of society. He did hang out in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. He did go to some concerts back then, but Monterey Pop wasn't one of them. But he knew what a big show it was and unlike Woodstock, he actually did see the movie and hear from people who attended about the concert. So he can fake it better than if he tried to pull off saying he went to Woodstock. "To be honest, while I dug the Grateful Dead, I was bigger into some of the other bands of the time." Her eyes widen as she waits to hear who else he liked. "I did catch any Doors show I could. Jim Morrison was so unpredictable that you never knew what to expect. I also liked Jefferson Airplane. Man could Grace Slick sing. Oh and Janis Joplin was just amazing. I never heard anyone else like her." Lucy is grinning as she says "I love Janis Joplin. Oh how I envy you. To be part of the sixties, right in the thick of it. Oh to be born earlier." Zero reaches over and puts his hand over hers and gently touches it. "Hey, you help keep the spirit of the sixties alive." She puts her other hand on top of his and says "Thanks, but it's not the same." Back at the motel, Zero stops in his room to check up on DDOJ, who is still asleep. He looks at how peaceful he looks and smiles. He then knocks on the adjoining door. Lucy yells out "Wait a minute." He wonders what she is doing. "Everything all right?" he asks as he checks to make sure the door is locked. "Just getting ready." she yells out. He looks puzzled as he has no idea what she is getting ready for. "Exactly what are you getting ready for? I thought we were staying at the motel." There is a moment of silence as he wonders what is going on. Then before he can knock again, he hears the door unlock. A second later, he hears "You can come in." As he opens the door, a shocked look comes over his face. He walks into a motel room, but he might as well be traveling back in time. There on bed, Lucy is sitting with a seductive look on her face. She is dressed in true hippie clothes. Bell bottom jeans, tie die top, headband and granny sunglasses. On the nightstand is a couple candles burning as well as some incense. She is smiling at him and says "Welcome to the sixties." She then stands up and walks over and locks the door. She then walks over and hits the play button on her portable tape player. Inside it is her sixties mix tape. It is full of some of her favorite psychedelic music that she plays when she wants to feel like she is part of the sixties. The tape starts off with Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermint." She then reaches into her top, between her breasts and pulls out a joint. She walks over and lights it on one of the candles and takes a puff. She then dances over to Zero and seductively blows the smoke at him. She then hands the joint to him. He looks at it as he has not touched any drugs in a long time. He is unsure if he should smoke it, but as he looks at her, he decides to give in to temptation. He takes a drag of the joint and starts coughing as his lungs are not used to smoke. She laughs at him as he gags on the smoke. "Some hippie you are, can't even smoke weed." He looks at her and says "It has been a long time. Gimme a break." She then takes the joint back and says "I will help you." She then takes a puff and walks over to him and starts kissing him. As he opens his mouth, she slowly blows some smoke into it. This time he does not choke. She then kisses him on the lips. He reciprocates and they go into a deep and passionate kiss. After a few seconds of deep kissing, she breaks loose and looks deep in his eyes. "Say groovy." Zero looks at her with an odd look. "What?" She gives him a disappointed look and says "Say groovy." Zero laughs a bit and says "We really didn't talk like that." She gives him a dirty look and says "This is my fantasy. If you want to get laid, then you need to play along. Now say groovy." Zero looks at her and says "OK, groovy." She steps back and pulls off her shirt. She drops it to the ground and walks up to him and takes his hands and puts them on her exposed breasts. "Maybe this will inspire you. Now say Garooooooveeee." She then kisses him as he rubs her breasts. When they quit kissing, he says "GAROOOOOOOOVEEEEEEE!" She giggles as she says "Now you're showing some enthusiasm." She then pushes him on the bed and climbs on top of him. She starts kissing his neck and moves over to his ears and whispers "Say Outta sight." Before he has a chance to say it, she pulls his shirt off and starts kissing down his chest. "OUTTASITE!" he yells out as she moves towards his stomach. As she reaches his pants, she stops and looks up at him. "Pretend I'm your groupie. Start singing something for me." Zero looks down at her with an odd look. "What do you want me to sing?" She starts undoing his belt as she says "Your the singer, I'm just a groupie. Sing me one of your hits, Mr. Morrison." Zero then thinks for a moment. It has been a long time since he sang a Doors song. She stops and waits for him to start singing. He looks down at her with a smile and begins his song "You know that it would be untrue. You know that I would be a liar. If I was to say to you, girl we couldn't get much higher. Come on baby light my fire." As the two agents are driving down the road on their way to Sturgis, they begin talking. The second agent is looking through Zero's file and he says "I have been reading his file and I cannot figure out why he just snapped." The first agent looks over at Zero's cab photo. He has a pissed off look on his face and a head full of long, crazy hair. "Kinda looks like Charles Manson to me." The second agent looks at the picture and says "I always thought he looked more like a crazed Greg Evigan." The first agent takes his eyes off the road and looks again. "Who's Greg Evigan?" The second agent breaks out laughing. "You really don't know anything, do you?" The first agent gives him a dirty look and says "OK wise guy, who is Greg Evigan?" The second agent continues to laugh as he says "You know the TV show, BJ and the Bear?" The first agent nods yes. "Well, he's main character on the show. The one who is not a monkey." The first agent then takes another look at the picture. "Yeah, he does sorta look like Greg Evigan." The second agent then continues "Anyway, I was reading how he was driving a cab when one day he never returned to work. He just drove off with the cab." The first agent keeps driving as he says "What's there to figure out, the guy is a looney." As he turns the pages of the docket, the second agent replies "Yeah, but it shows here that he was fully recovered and they released him. And he was living as a productive member of society for six months before this incident." As they come up to a motel, the first agent pulls the car in a spot and parks. "Obviously he was fully recovered, was he? I have said time and time again that once you are nuts, you are always nuts. You can't cure these wackos. Sure, they may act normal for a few months, but like a wild animal, sooner or later they will revert to their true form. And this guy is proof of that." As he closes up the docket, he looks over and says "Kill all the criminals, lock up all the mental patients and throw away the key, you just have it all figured out." The first agent smiles at him and says "Make me president and we will wipe out crime in six months." As they both get out of the car, the second agent says "The day you become president is the day I leave the US of A." Zero and DDOJ © 2007 Tom Zjaba and Dave Zjaba |
